Box Score EWING, N.J. – The No. 1 Salisbury University field hockey team defeated No. 6 The College of New Jersey in convincing fashion, scoring three unanswered goals in 70 minutes of play at Lion Stadium.
TCNJ (10-2) obtained possession of the ball early in the game and was able to get off three shots to test SU's defense but senior goalkeeper Anna Cooke (five saves) would make two saves as the defense cleared the ball out of its defensive end.
The maroon and gold's offense hit its stride nine and a half minutes into the game as senior Courtney Webster sent the ball into the back of the boards off a pass from classmate Tara McGovern. Two minutes later the Lions would get a chance to even the score, earning a penalty corner, but would not convert the opportunity.
Salisbury (12-0) increased its lead with just 12 seconds remaining in the half, scoring off a penalty corner of its own. Senior Alison Bloodsworth sent in her eighth goal of the season, off a pass from freshman Summer Washburn, to give the Gulls a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Entering the second half, Salisbury kept rolling along adding another goal at the 44:23 mark, off the stick of Webster, her 14th goal of the season.
TCNJ made a run late in the second half but could not overcome the Sea Gull defense led by McGovern, senior Shannon Hanratty and junior Amber Holland. The Gulls picked up their sixth shutout of the season.
The Sea Gulls' next contest will be at Sea Gull Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m., as they take on Capital Athletic Conference opponent Hood College.
