Sea Gulls advance to CAC championship game; Cooke sets program shutout record

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University field hockey team flew past York (Pa.) College in a Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinal game on Wednesday evening at Sea Gull Stadium. The Sea Gulls saw four different players score in the 6-0 victory.

Salisbury (16-1) dominated from the opening whistle, scoring in the first four minutes of play as sophomore Emily Voshell put the go-ahead goal into the cage with a shot from the right side of the circle. The goal was Voshell's first of the season.

Junior Erica Henderson earned her third hat trick of the season, her second against York, scoring the next three goals. The Westover, Md. native's first goal came in the eighth minute as she finished off a pass from senior Alison Bloodsworth and just 96 seconds later she slammed a pass from senior Caitlin Walker past the Spartan goalkeeper. Henderson would score once more to give the Gulls a 4-0 advantage at halftime.

The second half was more of the same as the maroon and gold dominated offensively, taking 12 shots and attempting three penalty corners.

Senior Tara McGovern and freshman Summer Washburn connected off a penalty corner, as Washburn centered a pass to McGovern who sent home the fifth goal of the game, her fourth of the season. Senior Courtney Webster sent in the final goal of the game at the 62:38 mark off a pass from sophomore Hannah Castelow.

Salisbury's defense faced three shots and six penalty corners by the Spartans throughout the game. York (11-9) looked as though it might score in the 66th minute but a defensive save by McGovern preserved the shutout for the maroon and gold.

With the win senior goalkeeper Anna Cooke picks up her 16th victory and eighth shutout of the season. Cooke now has 33 career shutouts, the most in the history of the Salisbury program, passing Joanna Fenske (1998-2001).

Salisbury will look to reclaim the CAC championship title on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Sea Gull Stadium against Wesley College. Last season, the Wolverines halted Salisbury's run for its 16th straight CAC title, winning 1-0 in the conference semifinal game. The time of the conference championship match is yet to be determined; check www.suseagulls.com for more information as it becomes available.
