Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 7 Salisbury University field hockey team played through a driving rain on Wednesday night at Sea Gull Stadium, picking up an 8-1 win in the team's first Capital Athletic Conference match of the season, against York College of Pennsylvania.
The Sea Gulls (8-2, 1-0 CAC) opened the scoring quickly, with sophomore Courtney Jantzen scoring twice in the game's first five minutes. Jantzen put home her first goal just two minutes into the contest. She set up at the left post and took a feed from junior Mallory Elliott on the left wing. Jantzen turned and fired underneath York keeper Abby Baker for the 1-0 edge.
Jantzen doubled the Salisbury lead less than three minutes later, carrying a ball in from the left wing, playing through a York defender before slipping the ball past Baker for the 2-0 advantage.
It marked the second straight game in which Jantzen has scored two goals and gives her a team-leading 10 goals on the season.
Jantzen was one of six goal scorers in the game for Salisbury, and joined by senior Stacey Lamboni as the only players with multiple tallies.
Lamboni made the lead 3-0 in the 18th minute, knocking down a drive from sophomore Samantha Johnson just in front of the cage. Lamboni was able to slide the ball into the cage for the three-goal lead.
Johnson would help set up the Gulls' fourth goal two minutes later. Johnson inserted a ball on a penalty corner chance from the left side, sending the ball across to the right wing. Junior Summer Washburn brought the ball into the circle and ripped a shot which freshman Hannah Miller tipped into the goal for the 4-0 advantage.
The penalty corner was one of just seven chances in that category for Salisbury while York (3-8, 0-2 CAC) had five opportunities. It was the only statistic in the game which Salisbury did not dominate. The Gulls held a 28-6 edge in shots and put 16 of them on target.
Salisbury added goals from Miller and classmate Yumi Kim to push the lead to 6-0 at halftime and never looked back.
York had a few more chances in the second half, finding the net once. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Clewer was tested with just four shots on goal in 60 minutes, stopping all four. Freshman Kate Russo turned away one York offering in the closing minutes of the match.
The Sea Gulls saw Lamboni's second goal of the game, less than three minutes into the second half, and senior Hannah Castelow put home Salisbury's final goal of the night with less than 18 minutes to play, carrying the ball from 20 yards out and getting around York keeper Brittany Alvarado, who replaced Baker in the first half, for the open cage and the 7-0 lead.
Salisbury will return to Sea Gull Stadium on Sunday afternoon, hosting Frostburg State University. The contest, which is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m., is also the Sea Gulls' fourth annual Corners for Cancer game.
