Box Score EWING, N.J. – The No. 3 Salisbury University field hockey team suffered its second loss of the 2013 season on Saturday night, falling 1-0 at No. 11 The College of New Jersey.
The Lions came out firing and pushed into the Sea Gulls' defensive end of the field, applying pressure throughout the contest. The Lions notched the game's first nine shots, including the only goal of the game, in the 21st minute, when Erin Healy found the back of the cage on her first tally of the season and a 1-0 lead for TCNJ (7-1).
The Lions held an 8-0 edge in shots during the first half, with six of those tries being on target. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Clewer was able to turn away four and senior back Katie Hastings made a defensive save to keep the Gulls (6-2) within the one goal at the break.
The tides began to turn after halftime with Salisbury evening out the statistics. TCNJ held just a 6-5 advantage in shots, with Salisbury getting a pair of attempts on target to go with two penalty-corner chances, in the final 35 minutes.
Junior Mallory Elliott put Salisbury's first shot on goal, in the 49th minute, which was turned away by TCNJ keeper Amanda Krause.
The Sea Gulls' only other shot on goal came in the 66th minute when freshman Yumi Kim fired off a shot turned away by Krause.
Clewer kept Salisbury within reach throughout the 70 minutes, matching her career high with eight saves in the contest, while sophomore Amanda Cooper had a pair of defensive saves.
The Sea Gulls return home on Wednesday night, hosting Rowan University at Sea Gull Stadium. That contest will begin at 6 p.m.
