Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University field hockey team capped its 2014 regular season with a 5-1 victory at St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday afternoon, improving its Capital Athletic Conference record to 6-0 for the year.
The Sea Gulls took little time building a lead, as senior Karen Cindea put home the first goal of the game at the 5:11 mark, on an assist from senior Summer Washburn.
Junior Courtney Jantzen doubled the advantage just eight minutes later with the Gulls' second goal, giving her 20 for the season to lead the team. Jantzen took the rebound off her own saved shot and redirected the ball past Seahawks' goalkeeper Christy Bishop.
Taking the 2-0 lead into the break, SU (15-1, 6-0 CAC) led in shots, 12-1, and penalty corners, 6-2. Only allowing one St. Mary's shot in the first period, the Salisbury defense, led by juniors Amanda Cooper and Breck Sullivan and sophomore Hannah Miller, only allowed four shots for the game.
Junior Samantha Johnson connected with senior Mallory Elliott on the second and third Salisbury penalty corners of the second half, effectively doubling the halftime advantage.
Just over five minutes into the half, Johnson inserted to Elliott for the Delmar, Delaware native's first score of the day, before reuniting less than three minutes later for the Sea Gulls' fourth score; Elliott tied for the team lead with her two goals in the game, while Johnson led with the two assists.
The Sea Gulls continued to keep the pressure on, taking 18 shots and producing seven penalty corners, before coming up with their final score.
The Seahawks broke up the shutout with just two minutes left in the second half, getting their lone goal from Brady Wolf, but the Gulls answered to rebuild the four-goal lead one minute and 41 seconds later.
Cindea grabbed the final tally and her second score by scooping the ball over Bishop and capping the win, as sophomore Abbey Shobe tallied the assist on the goal.
The Sea Gulls finished the game with a 30-4 advantage in shots, while taking 16 penalty corners to St. Mary's three.
Senior goalkeeper Rachel Clewer made three saves in the contest, playing all 70 minutes.
The Sea Gulls now look forward to the CAC tournament, in which they hold a first-round bye as the tournament's No. 1 seed; SU will host a semifinal game on Wednesday, November 5, with the opponent and game time to be determined.
