Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 2 Salisbury University field hockey team rolled to a 5-0 win over Stevenson University on Tuesday night to open the 2015 season, on the strength of two goals each from senior Courtney Jantzen and junior Casie Preisch and superb team defensive effort.
The Salisbury offense came out strong, attacking the Mustang (0-1) defensive zone, with six penalty corner chances and six shots in the first eight-plus minutes before the Sea Gulls were awarded a penalty stroke, which Preisch converted for the 1-0 lead.
Stevenson got its first extended offensive possession more than 11 minutes into the game, earning a penalty corner and turning in its first shot moments later, but sophomore goalkeeper Tressie Windsor was there for the blocker save on the near post.
With just under 10 minutes left in the opening half, Salisbury would strike again to double the lead. Senior Jessica Crew put a shot on target, which got past Stevenson goalkeeper Gabriella Brooks, but Blair Bitner was there for the defensive save. However, the ball would find the stick of Jantzen in front, and she was able to push home the insurance tally.
The score would remain 2-0 heading to halftime with Windsor sprawling on the ground to make a pair of stops off shots from Stevenson's Judi Neff in the closing minutes of the half. Windsor turned away five shots in the game to record her first win of the year. She only faced the five shots all night thanks to a strong defensive effort led by seniors Amanda Cooper and Breck Sullivan, and junior Annah Brittingham.
Jantzen pushed the Salisbury edge to three goals just over a minute into the second half. Standing at the left post, Jantzen got a tip on an effort from Crew, finding the back of the cage.
Preisch would score again midway through the period, ripping a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner insert from senior Sam Johnson, and Johnson would cap the scoring in the 66th minute, scoring from a similar location, just inside the circle on the right side.
The Sea Gulls (1-0) attempted 31 shots in the contest, with Brooks making 22 saves.
Salisbury returns to action this Friday and Saturday, traveling to the Misericordia Invitational. The Sea Gulls will take on King's (Pa.) College on Friday, September 4, at 4:30 p.m., and will take on the host, Misericordia University on Saturday, September 5, at 2 p.m.
