Johnson's goal, two assists lead No. 3 Salisbury to 4-0 win over Johns Hopkins

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 3 Salisbury University field hockey team controlled play throughout its contest Wednesday night at Sea Gull Stadium against Johns Hopkins University, coming away with a 4-0 victory.

The Sea Gulls would play the first 35 minutes in total control of the ball, only allowing the Blue Jays (4-3) a few offensive possessions, while Salisbury (6-0) had 18 penalty corner chances in the first half and fired 17 shots on Hopkins goalkeeper Greta Helvie.

Salisbury would get the second shot of the night past Helvie when senior Sam Johnson raced up the middle of the field, chipping the ball beyond the final defender and outracing her to the ball before slipping the shot under a charging Helvie for her fifth goal of the season and the 1-0 lead just under five minutes into the game.

The Sea Gulls kept the ball in the offensive end throughout the half, and had numerous chances, but it took 28 minutes before the Gulls would get on the board again. This time is was Johnson setting up the score for senior Courtney Jantzen.

Deep in the offensive end, Johnson sent a cross in front of Helvie, which Jantzen lifted into the top-left side of the goal, for her team-leading sixth of the season, and the 2-0 lead.

Two minutes later, the Sea Gulls received their final penalty corner chance of the half, and took advantage. Johnson inserted to junior Annah Brittingham on the left side. Her shot was stopped by Helvie, and nearly trickled across the line, but was held out. The Salisbury offense kept the pressure on as Helvie could not get the ball off the goal line, and senior Jessica Crew was able to lift the ball across the line, scoring with just under 10 seconds left in the half, giving the Sea Gulls a 3-0 lead at the break.

While Johns Hopkins held possession a bit more in the second half, the Salisbury defense, led by senior Amanda Cooper who notched her first defensive save of the year, gave up just two Blue Jay shots in the half (three in the game).

The Sea Gulls capped the scoring in the 50th minute when Johnson set up Jantzen on a nearly identical goal to the connection in the first half. Johnson was a bit further off the end line, but her centering pass was perfectly placed for Jantzen to be able to tip home the final goal of the night.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tressie Windsor earned her third shutout of the year, facing just the three shots. With the shutout, the Sea Gull defense has not allowed a goal in over 300 minutes, recording five shutouts in six games.

The win sends Salisbury through to Saturday's matchup at No. 1 The College of New Jersey with an unblemished record. The Sea Gulls and Lions are set to start their contest at 1 p.m.
