Penalty stroke ends Field Hockey's NCAA run at No. 2 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Salisbury University field hockey team battled to the last whistle but couldn't overcome a late, third-quarter penalty stroke to fall to the second-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, 1-0, in the second round of the NCAA Championship Tournament on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salisbury had a chance in the opening minute of the game. Salisbury turned up the pressure on Hopkins to force a penalty corner. Mack Dinopoulos' shot near post was kick-saved by Alexis Loder.
  • Julia Frankis redirected a Dinopolos shot from outside the arc in the early goings of the second quarter but the ball hit just outside the cage to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Sea Gulls had chances in the 24th and 27th minute but both shots were saved by Loder.
  • Maddie Brown-Scherer had a goal-scoring chance in the 41st minute on a counter-attack off a Salisbury turnover in the midfield but Dom Farrace made a diving stop and kept the ball out of the cage,
  • A penalty stroke was called in the 42nd minute of the game. Abby Birk's stroke was turned away pad side by Farrace.
  • Hopkins was rewarded another penalty stroke in the 44th minute. Emily Amsden's shot just went over Farrace's pad in the top-right corner of the cage for the lone goal of the contest.
  • Salisbury worked to try and get an equalizer in the final minute of regulation with three-straight penalty corners. Rebecca Lloyd had a swipe at goal as time expired but the shot went wide to end the game.

JOHNS HOPKINS GAME NOTES

  • The Salisbury defense gave Johns Hopkins fits as the Blue Jays were just limited to 10 shots with four on goal.
  • Emily Amsden scored the eventual game-winner on a penalty stroke in the 44th minute of the game.
  • Alexis Loder had three saves for Hopkins.

THE WRAP

  • Salisbury finishes the 2021 season with a 12-8 overall record. Despite the up-and-down season, Salisbury rattled off three-straight wins before Saturday's loss.
  • The Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Champions made its 27th consecutive and 36th overall trip to the NCAA Tournament. It is the longest streak across all three NCAA divisions.
