Simply put, Berkman is the greatest coach in the history of college lacrosse. Over his 38 years leading the Sea Gulls from 1989 through 2026, he set NCAA and non-NCAA records with 678 wins, a .902 winning percentage, and 13 national championships. Berkman went 13-7 over 20 appearances in the Division III national championship game while also guiding Salisbury to five additional Final Fours and 28 conference titles. He was named United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) National Coach of the Year four times and earned USILA Howdy Myers Man of the Year laurels in 2012.

While simultaneously building men's lacrosse into a national power, Berkman was also the founding head coach of Sea Gull women's soccer. He coached the program to a 102-28-5 record and two Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) championships through seven consecutive winning seasons from 1994-2000, culminating in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearance in 2000. Berkman was named CAC Coach of the Year following the team's inaugural 1994 season, and the Sea Gulls' 20 wins in 2000 remain the program standard.

Berkman was previously inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Hall of Fame in 2023. He is preceded in SU Hall of Fame induction by 27 of his former players (24 MLAX, 3 WSOC), including his son Kylor Berkman '09, a men's lacrosse standout enshrined in 2020.
